Masthead

Joe Balewski — Editor. Founder of Whitley Row LLC, the wire's publisher. LinkedIn.

Items on the wire run as unsigned wire copy: the machine does the volume, the standards do the gatekeeping, and the judgment behind both is the editor's. Every item the desk is uncertain about waits for the editor; every correction is logged, appended and dated. Every item page says "Edited by" and links here, so a reader always knows whose judgment an unsigned item carries.

What the editor does, and does not

The editor writes the charters the desk works under — what is a story, what is a pass, how a headline is built, what a source must be — and reads what the desk holds back. The editor decides what stands in the reference layer: The Numbers, The State of Search, Best practices and the Glossary, each of which moves only when a published item moves it. The editor signs off every correction and writes the Monday briefing, the one place on the wire where the week is read rather than reported.

The editor does not write items, take briefings from vendors, accept payment for coverage, or reach out to ask for links or mentions. Nothing on the wire is sponsored. The wire covers the publisher's other product, Cited, exactly as it covers any other vendor, and says so on the About page.

The wire's sourcing and method are public at Sources & Method; the publisher's disclosure — including Whitley Row's other product, Cited — is on the About page.
