BrightEdge: Reddit's ChatGPT education citations hit zero

Reddit’s presence in ChatGPT’s Education-category citations fell from 17.2% to 0% across two weeks in August 2026, according to a BrightEdge analysis tracking a fixed weekly panel of U.S. education prompts from week 28 through week 37 (July 6–September 13). BrightEdge says the content didn’t change and attributes the drop to Reddit’s robots.txt policy shift cutting off the crawl access its citations depended on. Government, university and professional-association domains — state.gov, asu.edu, apa.org and aacnnursing.org — took Reddit’s place and had held those positions through week 37; two other early replacements, onetonline.org and careeronestop.org, spiked and then receded.

BrightEdge’s robots.txt explanation is its own attribution: this wire’s August 27 coverage of the broader ChatGPT-wide Reddit citation collapse, drawn from Promptwatch and Search Engine Journal, found ChatGPT’s own change in how it builds background search queries (a jump in site:-operator use) preceded Reddit’s decline by about six days, leaving the single-cause account unsettled.
