Le Monde CEO: no AI Overviews traffic decline in France
Le Monde CEO Louis Dreyfus told INfluencia the outlet has seen no sudden audience decline roughly seven weeks after Google’s AI Overviews launched in France, citing 24,000 new subscribers in each of July and August and 7% growth in English-language traffic for H1 2026. Per Search Engine Journal, Dreyfus contrasted this with the French publishers’ group APIG’s complaint of a 33-38% search-referral loss, noting search drives only about half of a major news site’s visits and that service-content sectors — health, food, automotive — have reported declines of up to 50%.
Why it matters: Le Monde's numbers complicate the flat narrative that AI Overviews erode publisher traffic uniformly — the damage so far looks concentrated in service-content categories rather than news.
